Don’t Be So Sensitive!

Sensitive skin can be very frustrating and difficult to treat.  It is estimated that at least 50% of men and women suffer with sensitive skin at some time in their lives.  If you are one of those people, you are familiar with the common symptoms – redness, itching, and burning. Sensitive skin can be either genetic or environmental.

Genetic causes of sensitive skin include eczema, psoriasis, and rosacea.  These conditions are treatable but not curable.  They require ongoing management to achieve control, including avoidance of triggers and tailored treatment regimens.  Common environmental triggers include stress, climate, travel, sun exposure, cosmetics, and friction (think of razor burn).

Cosmetic intolerance syndrome is a common form of transient sensitive skin.  We unknowingly use too many different chemicals on our skin, too many strong active ingredients, or the wrong combination of ingredients that don’t react well with one another.  Also, over-exfoliation can damage the skin’s barrier by causing microscopic tears that lead to loss of moisture, irritation, and further intolerance to products.

What can be done to heal sensitive skin?  First, if an irritant is present it must be eliminated.  Second, special ingredients can repair and strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier.  Helpful ingredients are dimethicone, allantoin, and lipids.  Harmful ingredients that should be avoided include alcohol, fragrance, chemical sunblocks, exfoliants, and retinoids.

My suggestion is Rodan + Fields Soothe regimen.  Soothe incorporates RF Cold Fission technology, used to create a creamy moisturizer without the harsh emulsifiers that are typically used, as well as RFp3 technology, a proprietary blend of peptides, to soothe and detoxify the skin and alleviate dryness, redness, and irritation.
